What is DiSC?

DiSC is a behavioral assessment tool that helps individuals understand how they communicate, make decisions, and interact with others. It categorizes tendencies into four primary styles—Dominance (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C)—providing a simple, practical framework for understanding workplace behavior.

How It Improves Teams & Communication

DiSC gives teams a shared language. Instead of guessing why someone communicates a certain way, team members can better recognize and adapt to different styles. This leads to:

  • Clearer communication

  • Fewer misunderstandings

  • More effective collaboration

  • Stronger leadership and coaching

It also helps managers tailor their approach to each team member—improving engagement, accountability, and overall performance.

Why It Works

DiSC works because it’s easy to understand and immediately applicable. It doesn’t label people or put them in a box—it highlights tendencies and provides practical ways to adjust communication in real time.

When teams understand both their own style and others’, they spend less time navigating friction and more time working effectively together.

Retail People Solutions - Manager Retreat 2025

Retail People Solutions is a retail consulting firm focused on helping businesses improve performance by strengthening their people, culture, and operational structure. Their work centers on the belief that well-aligned teams drive better results, so they partner with retailers to develop stronger leadership, improve communication, and build more engaged, accountable store teams. Through coaching and proven tools, they help organizations create a clear vision and a culture that supports both employees and the customer experience.

In addition to team development, Retail People Solutions emphasizes operational excellence by implementing structured processes and consistent store routines that improve execution on the sales floor. Their approach is highly hands-on, using guided programs and workshops to address challenges, align leadership, and ensure strategies are carried through in day-to-day operations. They also host manager retreats, which provide dedicated time for leadership teams to step away from daily responsibilities, align on strategy, and strengthen collaboration.

In 2025, I had the opportunity to co-present DiSC training at one of their manager retreats, where we incorporated interactive elements like DiSCussion Bingo to spark meaningful, style-based conversations among participants. We also extended the learning beyond the session itself by using name badges to visibly highlight each participant’s DiSC style throughout the three-day event. Attendees used stickers to represent their styles and were encouraged to personalize their badges with markers, creating a simple but effective visual cue that reinforced awareness, encouraged connection, and kept DiSC top of mind in every interaction.

DiSCussion Bingo is an interactive team-building activity that blends the familiar format of bingo with meaningful, DiSC-based conversation prompts. Each square on the bingo card contains a statement or question tied to different communication styles, workplace behaviors, or common team scenarios (for example: “Prefers clear, direct communication,” or “Needs time to process before responding”). Participants move around the room engaging with others to find colleagues who relate to each prompt, marking off squares as they go. The goal is not just to complete a card, but to spark real conversations that help participants recognize and understand different behavioral tendencies across the team.

The value of the activity is in how quickly it breaks down barriers and makes DiSC practical. It encourages participants to step outside their usual circles, builds awareness of how different styles show up in everyday interactions, and creates “aha” moments around communication preferences. Because it’s active and conversational, it also increases retention—people remember what they experienced, not just what they were told. In a manager retreat setting, it’s especially effective for strengthening peer relationships, improving collaboration, and giving leaders a shared language they can immediately apply back in their stores when coaching their teams.
