Keeping Momentum Through the Middle of Summer

By July, most stores are deep into the rhythm of summer business. Traffic remains steady, seasonal categories are fully active, and teams are balancing customer service, recovery, inventory flow, and daily operations all at once.

This time of year often exposes where processes are working well—and where things may be starting to slip. Stores that continue performing at a high level through late summer are usually the ones paying attention to the details before they become distractions.

July is less about major changes and more about staying intentional with execution while beginning to look ahead to the next seasonal shift.

☀️ 3 Focus Areas for July

1️⃣ Refresh the Store Experience
After several months of summer selling, displays and promotional areas can begin to lose their impact. Customers may still be shopping the same categories, but the presentation often needs renewed attention.
Take time to:

  • Rework displays that look tired or picked over

  • Adjust feature spaces to create new interest

  • Clean up areas where merchandise has started spreading beyond its intended space

  • Revisit key adjacencies to improve shopability

A few thoughtful updates can help the sales floor feel more active and engaging without requiring a full reset.

2️⃣ Begin Preparing for Seasonal Transition
Even while summer remains busy, July is a smart time to start organizing for what’s ahead.
Now is a good opportunity to:

  • Evaluate which categories may need attention before fall

  • Identify fixtures or layouts that could be improved during slower periods

  • Reduce lingering overstock before new product arrives

  • Create a plan for upcoming transitions instead of reacting to them later

Stores that prepare early for seasonal change typically experience smoother transitions and less operational stress.

3️⃣ Keep Leadership Visible and Engaged
As the season progresses, teams often respond best to steady communication and visible leadership support.
Focus on:

  • Being present in high-traffic areas

  • Helping teams prioritize what matters most

  • Providing quick coaching moments throughout the day

  • Recognizing consistent effort during demanding weeks

When leadership stays engaged on the floor, teams tend to stay more focused and confident during busy periods.

💡 Quick Things to Check This Week

  • Walk your promotional areas with fresh eyes

  • Identify one display that could use a quick refresh

  • Look for inventory that’s beginning to collect unnecessarily

  • Review any areas where product flow feels difficult for customers

  • Spend time on the sales floor observing customer movement and team interaction

💬 Final Thought

July is often where strong operational habits make the biggest difference. Stores don’t usually fall behind all at once—it happens gradually through overlooked details, crowded spaces, inconsistent recovery, and unclear priorities.

The good news is that small adjustments made consistently can keep the store running smoothly through the busiest part of the season while also setting the stage for a stronger fall transition.

As we move further into summer, my schedule for merchandising support, department refreshes, operational projects, and reset assistance continues to stay active. If your team could use additional support with store flow, merchandising execution, or upcoming seasonal preparation, I’d be happy to help.

Thank you again for the continued conversations, partnerships, and opportunities to support your stores throughout the year. I truly appreciate it and look forward to continuing to work alongside your teams.
